Frequently Asked Questions about Counselling

How do I know if I need counselling?

It may be time to start counselling if you have been thinking about it. It is never too early, and preventing further mental health difficulties is always the best option. Whether you're struggling to express your needs, feeling down but not knowing why, or struggling to communicate effectively with your partner, friends, or family, coming to therapy can offer you a safe environment to explore any difficult feelings.

Who do you help?

Arula Counselling specialises in neurodiversity, trauma, depression, anxiety, and parenthood. Although, we believe that labels do not define us and therefore, having trust and feeling comfortable with your therapist is at the centre of every therapeutic relationship.

What happens during the consultation call?

We will get to know each other during the consultation call and discuss what brings you therapy. We will discuss any needs or goals you may have for therapy. Your therapist will tell you a bit about themselves and the service they provide. If both the client and the therapist feel this is the right fit, the work can begin, agreeing on a time that works for both.

Arula Counselling integrates creative, psychodynamic, mindfulness and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) approaches with a focus on neurodiversity-affirming and trauma-informed care.

What happens after the consultation call?

If you decide to move forward, your therapist will send you the following three documents:

  1. Referral Form

Referral form is for your therapist to keep your contact details and any relevant information necessary about you. These are all confidential and not shared with any third parties.

  2. Contract

The contract makes it clear to both you and the therapist about what happens during the therapy process. You can look through it in your own time, ask any questions and figure out whether this service is for you. We use DocuSign for signatures.

  3. Invoice

After you've signed the contract, your therapist will send you an invoice which is paid in blocks of 4. If you cancel a session in time (72 hours before the session), your therapist may be able to offer you an alternative time for the same week.

What happens in counselling sessions?

Arula Counselling works with clients on an ongoing basis. Counselling process is entirely individual and depends on your goals and what you bring to therapy since you are the 'expert' on yourself. Your therapist is there to listen in a non-judgmental way and support you in anything that comes up. Music and creativity can be combined in the sessions, such as music listening, meditation, art-making, or songwriting. However, this is not a requirement and depends on your preferences.

How long does counselling last?

The length of counselling is different for everyone. Throughout the counselling process, you will reflect on the progress continuously with your therapist, and assess when and whether it would be a good time to end therapy. You can always discuss ending treatment with your therapist if you feel sufficient growth has happened. You are free to stop counselling sessions at any time.

Is my information confidential?

Your privacy is essential to the therapeutic process. Arula Counselling keeps confidential and anonymised notes of your sessions. However, in case of thinking about harming yourself, others, or where the counsellor is compelled by law, we are required to share notes with third parties.

Can I get medical help or a diagnosis from you?

As we are not a medical service, we are not qualified to give you a medical diagnosis. However, if you do require medical help, we can guide you in finding a doctor or a psychiatrist in Berlin. Please bear in mind that as medical services are overloaded, this may take longer than expected.

Does health insurance cover counselling?

Unfortunately, we am unable to accept insurance as we am not a part of the German statutory health insurance system.

How much does counselling cost?

The cost of a 50-minute session is €80. Sliding scale fees are possible to individuals on a lower income.

Where should I start?

If you have thoughts about attending counselling but don't know where to start, get in touch, and we can find the answer together. We look forward to hearing from you.
